Abdourahamane Tchiani, known as Omar Tchiani, is the current head of state of Niger, having assumed power following a military coup in July 2023. Born in the early 1960s (sources indicate 1960, 1961, or 1964) in Toukounous, Filingué, Niger, his trajectory reflects a deep engagement with the military and a gradual, yet ultimately decisive, rise to national leadership.

Tchiani joined the Army of Niger in 1984 and underwent training at the National School of Active Officers in Thiès, Senegal. His military career is extensive and distinguished. Before commanding the Presidential Guard, he led Army forces in the Zinder, Agadez, and Diffa regions, actively combating drug trafficking. He was decorated for being the first officer to reach the site of the UTA Flight 772 crash in the Ténéré desert in 1989. His experience extends to international peacekeeping missions, including tours in Ivory Coast, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also served in the Multinational Joint Task Force established by Niger, Chad, Nigeria, and Cameroon to counter the terrorist organization, Boko Haram.

A pivotal moment in Tchiani’s career came in 2011 when he was appointed Commander of the Presidential Guard by then-President Mahamadou Issoufou. Seven years later in 2018 he was promoted to general. He was widely regarded as a close ally of President Issoufou. Notably, Tchiani led the Guard unit that thwarted an attempted coup in 2021, just days before Issoufou handed over power to his democratically elected successor, Mohamed Bazoum. Despite some reported deterioration in their relationship, Bazoum initially retained Tchiani in his post as head of the Presidential Guard.

On July 26, 2023, Tchiani led the military coup that detained President Mohamed Bazoum. Two days later, on July 28, Tchiani announced that he would be president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), the military junta that took power. He justified the coup by citing the need to prevent the “gradual and inevitable demise” of the country, criticizing the previous government’s perceived ineffectiveness in addressing insecurity caused by a jihadist insurgency. His actions triggered a significant regional crisis, eventually ending in 2024.

On March 26, 2025, Tchiani was formally sworn in as the President of Niger for a five-year transitional period under a new charter that replaced the country’s constitution. At this time, he was also elevated to the rank of general of the Army of Niger. He issued a decree dissolving all political parties and thus solidifying the military’s control over the nation. His government has since pursued an agenda focused on modernizing the army, promoting economic independence, and implementing a nationalistic agenda, including closer alignment with Russia and China and a withdrawal of French and American troops.

In his personal life, General Abdourahamane Tchiani is married and has five children. No specific names of his wife or children are publicly available.
