Bassirou Diomaye Faye, born on March 25, 1980, in Ndiaganiao, Senegal, is the fifth and current President of Senegal, having assumed office on April 2, 2024. His ascent to the presidency is a remarkable story, particularly given his relatively recent emergence on the national political stage and his victory just weeks after being released from prison. At 44 years old, he is the youngest elected president in Senegal’s history.
Faye’s educational background is rooted in law and public finance. He studied law at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and subsequently attended the National School of Administration of Senegal (ENA), where he trained to become a tax inspector. Following his graduation, he embarked on a career as a tax official in the Tax and Estates department, a role that would prove pivotal in shaping his political trajectory.
It was during his time as a tax inspector that Faye developed a close relationship with Ousmane Sonko, a fellow tax official and burgeoning political figure. Together, they became active in the Autonomous Union of Tax and Domain Agents, a trade union that Sonko led. This professional and unionist connection laid the groundwork for their collaboration in the political arena.
In 2014, Faye joined Sonko in co-founding the Patriotic Senegalese Party for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF).While Sonko was the charismatic leader and public face of the party, Faye served as its “architect,” focusing on doctrine and internal organization. He steadily rose through the party ranks, becoming the secretary-general of PASTEF in October 2022.
Faye’s political journey took an unexpected turn when he, like Sonko, faced legal charges that supporters claimed were politically motivated. In April 2023, Faye was arrested and jailed on charges that included defamation of magistrates and contempt of court. His imprisonment, however, did not deter his political ambitions or those of his party. When Ousmane Sonko was disqualified from running in the 2024 presidential election, Faye, still incarcerated, was endorsed by PASTEF as their alternative candidate.
His release from jail on March 14, 2024, just ten days before the election, invigorated his campaign. Running on a platform of anti-corruption, monetary reforms, and renegotiation of natural resource contracts, Faye quickly garnered widespread support, capitalizing on Sonko’s popularity with the slogan “Diomaye mooy Sonko” (Wolof: “Diomaye is Sonko”). In a crowded field of 19 candidates, Bassirou Diomaye Faye secured over 54% of the vote in the first round on March 24, 2024, avoiding a runoff and marking a historic victory for the opposition.
In his personal life, Bassirou Diomaye Faye has two wives: Marie Khone Faye and Absa Faye. Marie Khone Faye, his first wife, has been married to him since 2009, and they have four children (three boys and one girl). Absa Faye became his second wife in 2023. This familial structure became publicly known following his electoral victory. Upon his inauguration on April 2, 2024, he appointed Ousmane Sonko as his Prime Minister, signaling a continuation of their close political partnership.
